Hill-Billy Village Idiots

Hill-Billy Village makes a buck playing off every southern stereotype on the market. The redneck humor that makes its way onto a variety of souvenirs might be funny if it weren't so dang close to the truth.

Bubba jokes come in a double wide assortment of tacky mementos - from roadkill cookbooks to toothless grinning cartoon postcards. Bottle corks are thrown into plastic bags and stamped "Hillbilly Pregnancy Kit". The place is Spencers for the Willie Nelson crowd. Check your mullet at the door.

The promised highlight of a visit, as sprawled across their fence in yellow letters, is a chance to see real moonshine stills. A hallway with numerous signs warning that people videotaping this will be asked to leave, exits to a dirt backyard.

The stills turn out to be nothing more than old oil drums with pipes sticking out of them. They are rusted to the point of almost being dissolved. On the opposite end of the lot, is a shack said to be an actual hillbilly home brought down from the mountains. More likely it is just all those wife beaters that didn't sell in the gift shop nailed together.

You get what you pay for. Needless to say, the Hill-Billy Village exhibit is free.
