Grown On The Range

Hilltop Steak House provides a very mooving site for drivers on Route One in Saugus. A herd of cows are gathered below what can only be the largest light up cactus in New England.

The most famous bovine is Ferdi. In 1981 Ferdi was found grazing atop the Great Dome at MIT in Boston. It is fondly remembered at the MIT Museum's Hall of Hacks along side the history of smoots.

The stunt, which first infuriated Hilltop management, would become great meat marketing.

Hilltop serves six tons of salad a week.

"We got inundated with people who came to see the place where it was missing. I've been here 24 years, and that incident still comes up often," says the company's vice president.

Inside, cowpokes can wrestle up some grub in either the Carson City or Virginia City rooms of the restaurant. Hilltop's "Chuck Wagon" is always available to bring the feed bags to your next hoedown.
