Doing The Wave

River Street, along Savannah's harbor, is still paved in cobblestone. If you risk breaking an axle on this disaster they consider charming, the cities friendliest person awaits you at the end.

A large bronze statue of a girl, that appears to be shaking out a rug, stands gazing out at the Savannah River with a Lassie looking companion. The piece is entitled "Florence Martus - Savannah's Waving Girl," with no other explanation as to why her heroism is important. Then again, Florence did little more than wave.

Waiting for her sailor lover to return, perhaps even shunned by Georgians who thought she went overboard with the southern hospitality bit, Florence spent forty-five years of her life greeting every ship that entered the port up until 1931. Today, boats toot as they cruise by her image. It is unclear if the dog ever waved.
