Pop Goes The Skyline

Big Wheel keeps on turning. Disney keeps on earning. Rolling, rolling, rolling over Orlando.

With the first hotel phase set to open this December, Disney is out to cash in on nostalgia in a very big way.

Pop Century Resort will present oversized icons to symbolize each decade of the 20th century with it's kitschy centerpiece being a Goliath Big Wheel. Objects will include a Rubik's Cube, Play-Doh, yo-yos, bowling pins, jukebox and Mickey Mouse phone. OK kids, which one of these items doesn't belong?

Disney Imagineers (oh, please) worked with the original manufacturers to create their pop monuments. Objects were digitized, created in foam, sprayed with with fiberglass and then covered with a steel armature.

The hotel will have 5,760 rooms spread across 20 buildings and is being pitched as a budget hotel. At $80 to $105 a night you decide. Reservations are already being taken.

Opening dates are as follows:

  • 1950s - December 2001
  • 1960s - February 2002
  • 1970s - April 2002
  • 1980s - August 2002
  • 1990s - August 2002

    Update 10/01
In the light of recent terrorist attacks and the nose dive it has caused Florida tourism to take, construction on the resort has been suspended indefinitely. Disney was the first attraction to scream poor to the government in the hopes of getting more signs. They have done little to attract Florida residents to their parks and continue layoffs.
