OBT, Yeah You Know Me

Florida numbered its state roads around 1917.

As auto travel began to flourish just prior to the depression, three major routes would set the pace for visitors to the sunshine state. They were US 1, US 41 and US 27. Many attractions that have since been coined "Old Florida" flourished along these routes from 1929 to 1971.

US 27 was toted as The Orange Blossom Trail on countless tour maps and brochures. It ran north to south through the state and was actually a series of connecting roads, although most people just referred to it as 27.

All total, the The Orange Blossom Trail contained about ten percent of the roadside attractions in Florida. Some, such as Cypress Gardens, Silver Springs, Bok Tower, Gatorama and The Citrus Tower, can still be visited today.

In the 1960s a new highway system would begin to pave around the charm of the old state roads. This compounded by the arrival of Mickey Mouse in 1972 all but leveled what most though of as typically Florida destinations.
